A cult figure in American country-folk circles, Townes Van Zandt died in 1997. Despite being born to a rich oil family, Van Zandt spent much of his life destitute, battling manic depression, long-term memory loss (caused by insulin shock therapy), drug addiction and alcoholism. Although never commercially successful in his lifetime, Van Zandt has had a lasting impact and is an oft-cited influence.
'St. John The Gambler' is a song from his 1969 album Our Mother The Mountain. It also appears on the soundtrack of the film In Bruges.
